Tangram Neue is a typeface inspired by the nature of tangram constructing the world using simple geometric shapes. This typeface is to explore possibilities of “geometric deconstruction”, a self-invented term to describe the process of rebuilding the existing real world object into pure geometric shapes. It is a revolution to challenge traditional perceptions of structure and form.
Concept
Tangram (Qi Qiao Ban) is an ancient Chinese dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat polygons. They can be put together to form different shapes existing in the real world. This interesting mechanism give it a long-lasting life that Tangram is still a prevelent game form until today.
If we have a set of Tangram, we can express many things visually. This characteristic makes me think of a set of alphabet, through which we can express everything verbally.

If we combine the two, we'll be able to visualize any letter by shape.
Design Thinking
I divide an English alphabet into vowels, consonants and semivowels. Based on their different functions in the pronounce of a letter, I give each of them a different logic (forms, colors) to design.
They're based on a traditional tangram grid system.
Type Specimen
The specimen for this typeface has two main parts. The first part is to display the typeface, and the second part is to introduce some shapes the type can come up with as a play guide.
Physical Typeface
In order to promote the concept that this typeface is playable, I create a physical set of this typeface, using laser cut technique on transparent acrylic sheets.
